I don’t know what catergory this belongs in. My husband and I would like to sell my wedding rings and use the money to get a new set. I have a 1/2 carat princess cut solitaire and 2 half carat channel bands. So the total weight is a 1/1/2 carat total weight. Who should we take them too?

Pawn shops don’t give much $$ for them, either put an ad in the local paper or sell on ebay

I’d like to become a wedding photographer, but I have no idea where to start!

Hi, that’s a perfect question for me! I will tell you briefly my story… After I came to the US 9 years ago I started my life basically from Zero, from scratch. I was working at a tailor shop, photography was my hobby for many many years. I used to develop black and white film and print pictures in my “bathroom lab”. Once I was asked to photograph a Bday party for a friend. After that their family was inviting me to all their events. Yeah – I was very cheap! One day my friend – who happened to be a photo studio owner – saw my photographs and she loved them. She invited me to work for them and learn wedding photography. So I did. I have learned what pictures to take, ceremonies and what photographs go into the album… now I have my own business for 4 years and I am still learning… so I am giving you just my opinion, take it or not is your decision…

Get to work for at least one year for a wedding photography studio. As an assistant or a second photographer. Find and ask successful wedding photographer to work for them, ask them to be a mentor. You may end up doing work for no money, but you will gain knowledge you need. Knowledge and practice are your assets. Learn to do business. It is an investment of your time and money but it worth it. How to do numbers, marketing, figure out what works and what doesn’t. You will become a salesperson of photographic services. I am not kidding. This was my biggest mistake to think that I am a photographer. Business fails if it does not make you a nice living. This is a whole lot to be a business owner. You focus on goals, personal growth, networking, selling, marketing. Learning business side is a huge and most important part. BUT you have to be an excellent photographer, have your style, know your craft and keep learning ever changing professional field. You must be passionate about weddings and photography. There are many photographers out there who just to want to make some extra bucks, and there are some that hate wedding photography. It is stressful, it is responsible, you cannot make a mistake and you cannot fail. This is a lifetime event. You work really hard on marketing to get the booking. Then you work like crazy for 6-8 hours in a row at the event and then you work 40-60 more hours just with images, clients and albums. I do it because I have fun doing this. I LOVE photography, I love business and I love learning. It is not JOB for me but fun. Sometime it’s stressful, but FUN. I feel very good when I handle the bride her wedding album and they just love it!

There is an option to avoid all business owner hassle – work for someone else for a fixed pay. There is a national company as Bella Pictures, they hire talented photographers. But if you want just to begin (I assume you know photography) practice with existing studio as an assistant. Then you will see if this is something for you. Have a friend who is getting married? Offer free photo coverage as a gift and do your best. Create your portfolio – this is very important. In the beginning you do work for free a lot just to build your portfolio.
If you have any further questions, you may contact me, I will do my best to help you. info@upscalephoto.com

It’s a bit long but there is no shortcut…

One of our local churches only requires six months notice and an offering of $200 if you can give one.. Is this good? We’re trying to get married by church and do things right at the same time were trying to save money because we know after the wedding day that’s it we are on our own.. so is $200 good??..

It’s more than good. Most churches require a year’s notice and the donation can be up to $500, depending on the type of church (Cathedral etc).

Good luck!

My fiance and I are interested in having our wedding ceremony outdoor at the beginning of fall 2011. Other than the Amphitheatre at Hawrelak Park, the Muttart Conversatory and the Outdoor Gazebo at Chateau Louis Hotel, what are the other outdoor wedding venues in Edmonton?

We’ve tried contacting a few golf courses but many refuse to do a facility rental for only a few hours in the afternoon (they want the whole day, reception and catering). We would love to have our ceremony at a golf course in Edmonton if it is possible!

Thank you.

I would check out any beautiful homes that are bed and breakfast – my friend had her wedding at a queen ann victorian home – it was beautiful

When having an outdoor wedding one often worries about the bridal parties’ shoes and most important the bride’s dress. Who wants dirt and grass stains on their special dress?

What you can do is rent something called an aisle runner. It is literally a very long narrow carpet/fabric (just like rolling out the red carpet, but there is more than one color to choose from.) It is usually white.

There is also the disposable runner which is made out of a light plastic. I would look at both and decide which you like best, and which is the one you can afford.

Most bridal companies can connect you with a service that carries one or both if they don’t have it themselves. Usually a place that rents out chairs will carry one or knows another company that does.

Good luck with the special day!
