Hi, I’m a senior in high school and i’ve been really interested in photography for years. I take pictures of people all the time, and I think a good career for that would be wedding photography. I’ve heard some bad things about it, like the weekend hours. But can someone tell me some positives? Or other good careers involved with photography that would suite me.
You should enjoy dealing with people first and foremost. Both the good and the not so good. Bridezillas do exist, although my experience has been overwhelmingly the opposite with my brides. Those horror stories on TV can be true. You have to be organized, insightful, prepared to handle almost any wedding emergency, be a counselor, keep the time clock, soothe frayed nerves, prod reluctant people into participating (and liking it!) and be psychic all while keeping your eye and lens on everything that is happening at two or three different locations.
It takes a lot of practice to become proficient at shooting weddings. Plan on interning for a while rather than getting that practice on clients.
The money outlay for gear is size-able, and with digital on-going. You need good stuff, and two or more of everything you use. I have three main camera bodies and three flashes (actually four) In some things you need backups for the backup. $$$
Weekends. U haz to wurk on dem.. Especially during the spring and summer months, and around holidays. I have shot weddings on the 4th of July four years out of five. And I am a weekend warrior!
Long, demanding days where you are constantly on your feet, kneeling, crouching, climbing etc while hanging twenty pounds of cameras and flashes around your neck. A typical wedding photographer’s day may start well before noon and run on into the wee hours of the next morning.
Business organization. Plan on taking a few business classes, hiring a lawyer to make your contract, and a CPA to advise you on taxes. More businesses fail because of lack of planning the boring financial stuff rather than lack of talent in the photography part.

My boyfriend is currently working on his Masters degree in the UK and planning to come to Canada on a student visa later in the summer. I reside in Toronto, Ontario and am a Canadian citizen. He is not a Canadian citizen. We have been talking about marriage and the different types of ceremonies, i.e. civil, church, and traditional like here he is from in Nigeria. Is it possible to have a civil union ( having a judge or justice of the peace perform the ceremony) and still have a church wedding later?

We’re having an outdoor wedding, in a large tent actually. But there is no access to electricity, so we need to rent generators. We want to have a live band, and I’m wondering what size generator we’ll need. Thanks.
You need to know the total load of all of the equipment (in watts), then you need a very quiet generator, sized at about 120% of the total required load.
The extension cords will need to be pretty long, in order to keep the generator far enough away from the band. That means they will need to be at least #12 or #10 AWG UL listed cords (and, they cannot be plugged into each other; extension cords are not listed to be joined together) with the male ground plug not broken off or removed.
Due to the (lack of) grounding requirements for portable generators, you will get a lot of "noise" from this type of set up. The "surging" of the generator may damage any sensitive electronic gear (such as amplifiers and mixing boards); the band may not be willing to risk this.
If the location you are having your reception at has no outdoor electricity available for you to use; see if they will let you pay the local utility company for a temporary drop to a temporary meter (with a sufficient number GFCI protected receptacles – you will probably need a temporary type 3-R panel, also). Have a qualified licensed electrician install the meter pedestal, and make sure that he provides two ground rods at least 6′ apart and at least 8′ long.
It sounds like a lot of trouble to go through, but there won’t be any noise from the generator for the band to compete with, no one will spill gasoline on their tux while refueling the generator, you may also avoid another annoyance – a fire from gasoline spilled on a hot generator, and you won’t have to worry about any damage to the band’s equipment. (You will also enjoy your reception more; and, if you are videotaping it, you will enjoy watching the video much more without that aggravating generator in the background.)

For me it’s pictures. I want millions of professionally done photos, and that’s where I’d spend my money. I don’t give a crap about table settings. My guests can sit on picnic benches for all I care. To me a live DJ at a wedding is obnoxious. They say rude, disgusting things, and they’re too loud, so I’m skipping that.
Think small. Only a few guests mean only a few meals, and a small cake.
Think second hand. You can get fabric, and other decorations at yard sales.
